Canon T2i / 550D Firmware Update Version 1.0.8

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Canon released a firmware update for the Canon T2i and 550D which fixes “a phenomenon in which the set aperture moves unexpectedly when shooting movies in manual exposure mode using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses).” It is always a good idea to keep your camera up to date so I recommend to all owners to update.

You can find the firmware here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eosdigital7/firmware.html

Philip Bloom Attacks Man in Buffalo

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Over the past weekend I took the two hundred some mile trip up to Buffalo, New York to meet up with some DSLR enthusiasts and Guru Philip Bloom. We all met at Duff’s Famous Wings in Depew, New York last Sunday to enjoy some buffalo wings, talk, and share DSLR info. It still amazes me that some 20 strangers can get together and have lunch and get along really well. Highlights of the whole thing would have to be watching Rob taste a death wing and almost cry, Philip actually eating a death wing, and me getting death wing sauce in my eye and needing Philip to pour water in my eye to help save it. I owe you one Philip.

DSLR Viewfinders | A Challenger Appears

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Sorry for not updating on my usual Monday mornings. Last week was finals week and this is my first week on break so I needed a little relax time. But I’m back!

More and more DSLR manufactures are entering the viewfinder race and in my observation Zacuto really sets the standard for a DSLR Viewfinder which is why I decided to go with the Z-Finder. This is not to say that other manufactures are making lesser products. Like in my previous post comparing the Z-Finder to the Hawk, Letus has really put there best foot forward in there variation of a Viewfinder. But we seem to have a few other contenders that I didn’t touch base on in my original post.

Genus, manufacture of some great budget matte boxes and other camera accessories, has come out with their own Viewfinder. The Genus Loupe(G-LV) has a 2.5x magnification and fits 3-inch screens, made from hard plastic, and is rumored to cost around $125-$150. I have emailed the company asking for more details, but that is all I could dig up for now. If I get a response I will be sure to update this post. Click here for more information on the G-LV

Zacuto Knock-Offs

Monday, June 7th, 2010

BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

It doesn’t take long after a new popular technology comes out for a few knock offs to hit the shelves and DSLR supports are no exceptions. While browsing around I came across two Zacuto rig knock-offs that might rival the real thing and felt compelled to share.

Neutral Density Filters for HDSLR

Monday, May 31st, 2010

The options we have.

Now I’m not going to get into why you should get an ND(Neutral Density) Filter or how they work. For that I’ll send you over to Nick Jones post over at ExposureHD “Your brain, frame rates and why you should have a variable ND filter“. It is a good read and clears up some shutter speed information.

What I am doing in this post is showing the options that I have gathered through my quest to find a ND Filter. I am all about finding the cost effective solution to my HDSLR needs and I figure if they are helping me out maybe they can be of use to other. So here are the three that I have found.

Battle of the DSLR Viewfinder

I recently stumbled across the Letus Hawk VF and was taken back a little bit when the first sentence of it’s description is “100% custom designed”. It looks astoundingly close to the Zacuto Z-Finder Pro and the specs are pretty close as well.

HDSLR Supports and Cages

Friday, May 21st, 2010

So Zacuto just announced their Z-Cage, but at the steep price of $1,392.70 you won’t be see me wielding one of these bad boys anytime soon. But this new addition to the Zacuto family really got me thinking about the large amounts of new products, including cages, that this HDSLR revolution has give us enthusiasts. Not to mention the large amounts of DIY projects out there. So I felt compelled to throw together a few of my favorite DSLR Camera supports that I have found, DIY and Consumer Grade.

Z-Cage:
