Video Archive Solution

Voyager Q Hard Drive Docking Station (FireWire® 800/400/USB 2.0/eSATA SATA I/II)

When working in the digital video realm you start accumulate a ton of files! With raw footage, trans-coded footage, voice overs, sound beds, graphics, scratch disks and so much more your machine will become overwhelmed and so will you with out a way to archive all of that data. When I got hired into a video department one of my first jobs was to figure out a better way to archive all of their projects. You never know when a client will call up and need you to revisit a 4 year old project. I began to research all of our options and instantly ruled out external hard drives. I have had Western Digital My Book hard drives crash on me before and simply couldn’t rely on them. Also they can become pricey having to purchase multiples. A server was the next option but with such a small operation as our video department I thought it was a little to complicated for a simple archive. I then turned to a docking station and found the best! The Voyager Q Hard Drive Docking Station has Firewire 800 and 400, esata, is hot swappable and simply amazing! It has been dubbed the “Hard Drive Toaster” in my work place and hasn’t failed yet in an entire year. You simply purchase some cheap internal hard drive’s like the Western Digital 1 TB insert them into the dock, transfer all files, eject the drive, and store the hard driver for future use! It is so cost effective I believe even a one person production could benefit from this system.

  1. Phil, thanks a lot for this article. I’m nearly positive I am going to adopt this data archival system. I just love the idea of reducing the ten AC Adaptors & USB cords of my random external harddrives, and storing all the internal drives in one safe place!
